FLATMATES

Flatmates as an exhibition looks toward the array of relationships that can arise from people living together; whether it be family, university halls, strangers from spare room or a partner. Living with someone cultivates a specific kind of relationship that can only come to fruition through sharing domestic space.

Maybe you had a flatmate who left dishes to pile up until they grew mould which drove you up the walls, but you also understood that they were struggling so you soaked their pans for them. Maybe you had a flatmate who you only ever saw the shadow of in the early morning before work or creeping to get a snack at 3am and now for the rest of time you and your friends refer to them as ‘the ghost’. Maybe you live with your sibling who takes way too long in the shower which leads to weekly shouting matches but at the end of the day you come home to a home cooked meal in a tupperware in the fridge with a sticky note from them saying:

“I love you, I hope you had a good day, here’s one less thing to do today”

Flatmates come to us in a variety of forms and circumstances. Whether you live with family, by yourself, with a partner or strangers who have become an adopted family, we all know the ways in which flatmates play a pivotal role in shaping our lives while we share a space with them.

This exhibition is a curation of work looking at how the artists have relayed the theme of “Flatmates” to their own lives and experiences. Please enjoy the work, let it spark your own memories, how lucky (or unlucky) you may have been to share a space with your own flatmates.

Enjoy,
